DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n\nJoin local published poet and educator\, Scott Bade\, for this 8-part poetry writing workshop. There will be prompts and group discussion. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Kalamazoo educator and published poet Scott Bade for an eight-part poetry writing workshop series from September through December 2026. Write\, learn\, and grow through this series presented in partnership with the Kalamazoo Poetry Festival. \nThe workshop is capped at 10 participants. Please only register if you are able to attend all eight sessions\, as registering and not attending may prevent someone else from participating. \nAll sessions will take place from 6–8 p.m. on the dates listed below. Please add each session to your personal calendar. \nPLEASE NOTE: At Scott’s request\, if you have participated in one of his workshops within the past year\, please refrain from registering. Are you looking for thoughtful feedback from a supportive group\, new poetic tools to strengthen your writing\, or simply a space to explore poetry in community with others who feel the same pull toward the craft? \nThis eight-part workshop series meets twice a month from September to December\, from 6:30-8:30pm.\, at the Kalamazoo Poetry Festival space inside the Kalamazoo Nonprofit Advocacy Coalition in downtown Kalamazoo. \nWriter Scott Bade will facilitate the series\, using instruction\, writing prompts\, and supplemental materials to help participants develop and shape their own work. You can read more about Scott below. \nScott Bade is the author of Preemptive Elegy (2024 – Kelsay Books) and the chapbook My Favorite Thing About Desire\, co-winner of the 2018 Celery City Chapbook contest. He teaches at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and Kalamazoo College. Scott Bade’s award-winning poetry has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and his poems have appeared in Fugue\, Shadowgraph\, Reed Magazine\, Foothill and elsewhere.

DESCRIPTION:To sign up\, use the link below\, or click here.  \nWorkshop Description: \nThis practical workshop\, facilitated by Shonda Buchanan\, helps writers navigate the professional side of their creative practice\, with a focus on preparing strong bios\, cover letters\, and submissions. Participants will learn how to present themselves and their work effectively\, identify submission opportunities\, and leave with tools they can use when submitting to publications\, grants\, residencies\, and other opportunities. \nShonda Buchanan Bio: \nKalamazoo\, Michigan native Shonda Buchanan is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Western Michigan University and Alma College’s MFA Program in Creative Writing. Three-time Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominee\, Shonda is an Oxfam Ambassador\, a PEN Emerging Voices Fellow and a PEN America Mentor. Author of the award-winning amemoir\, Black Indian and The Lost Songs of Nina Simone (2026 winner of the Black Caucus American Library Association Poetry Book Award)\, Shonda’s other books include Who’s Afraid of Black Indians? and Equipoise: Poems from Goddess Country and two poetry anthologies. President of the Michigan Poetry Society\, Shonda is the former Board President for Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center\, current Board member of the Kalamazoo Poetry Festival and the Kalamazoo Arts Council. Shonda has published in and/or written for Poetry Daily\, The Mississippi Review\, Tab Journal\, Step Into a World: A Global Anthology of the New Black Literature\, the Los Angeles Times\, the LA Weekly\, LA Times Magazine\, AWP’s The Writer’s Chronicle\, Indian Country Today and Red Ink Journal. DESCRIPTION:You can sign up for this workshop starting November 1. The link will become available then.  \nDescription:\nShifting Places: a poetry workshop inspired by bird migration. Participants will explore the experience of changing spaces\, homes and environments through the lens of bird migration. We will read poems about birds\, then write poems inspired by our reading and discussion. At the close of the session\, participants may opt to share their work with the group. \nBio: \nNancy Hoy Nott taught Language Arts to high school and college students in the Kalamazoo area for over 40 years. Currently\, she facilitates writing workshops and continues to explore writing her own poetry as well. When she isn’t at her writing desk\, she enjoys outdoor activities in every season\, outings with family and friends\, and travel. \n
